FREE YOUR MIND AND YOUR ASS WILL FOLLOW

Kevin MacNutt <egebamayasi@hotmail.com> (28.08.2004)

I do agree, this album is way, way too short, although the highlight for me would have to be the title track. "Free your mind.." is very similar to the type of music Can would do on both Tago Mago and Ege Bamayasi. I can just hear Damo Suzuki incoherrently singing "Flee yor mind, and yor ass will forrow" over and over again with Karoli doing his best Eddie Hazel impersonation. I would have to say the stereo and tone effects are really distracting though. I have tapes that have been eaten that sound similar. Check out the rest of their early stuff, it is all quite good. Alot of it seems to be more for the avant-garde or free jazz fan than the typical soul and R&B fan.

MAGGOT BRAIN

Steven Uhlmansiek <Steven.Uhlmansiek@stls.frb.org> (31.12.2002)

I agree that the solo by Eddie Hazel is not one of the best of all time. It does jam though. My first exposure to this song was on a Mike Watt album Ball-Hog or Tug boat?. J. Mascis does this and I was blown away. I then heard the original and it just didn't measure up to J's version. I wonder, if I had heard the Eddie version first, would that be my favorite? Oh well, check out the Ball-Hog version if you get a chance. Overall, good record just not great.

I couldn't agree more. Every song has something to offer (and are indeed some of Funkadelic's finest) except the last one which is a nine minute waste of time. The highlights are the opening acoustic guitar lick to "Can You Get to That", the opening riff to "Hit It and Quit It" and the hard rocking "Super Stupid" not to mention the epic guitar solo that is "Maggot Brain". Funkadelic had a more organic, earthy sound at this time as opposed to the more spacey, synthesized grooves of later records. Very good stuff on here.
