SPLEEN AND IDEAL

Alex Zaitsev <zaitsev@perm.ru> (10.05.2004)

Spleen And Ideal might well be the Dead's best. On no other album have they managed to create an atmosphere that impressive and involving. The following albums put too much emphasis on the operatic side of Lisa's superb singing for my tastes. Each of them has it's own merits, of course, but the gloom of Spleen and Ideal has never been recreated again. 'Advent' almost sounds like a crazy medieval version of Joy Division, doesn't it? I love Perry's approach to singing, in general. Sounds stern and resigned, like a priest or an inquisitor. Some might consider it monotonous, but it fits the songs like a glove. Spleen and Ideal is so good that it turns out to be my favourite album of the year, beating Tom Waits' Rain Dogs by an inch. And I love singer - songwriting and can't say that about whatever genre Dead Can Dance's music belongs to. So, to like this album, you don't have to like the whole genre at all. And that's good, I say!
