\data\cauc\caucet
Proto-North Caucasian: *=Hīmx_wV
Sino-Caucasian etymology: Sino-Caucasian etymology
Meaning: to learn, teach
Proto-Nakh: *ħēχ-
Proto-Avaro-Andian: *=iʎʷ(Vn)- (~-ƛʷ-)
Proto-Lak: l-ax:i-
Proto-Lezghian: *ʔiʎ:a-
Notes: Reconstructed for the PEC level. Correspondences are regular.
Proto-North Caucasian: *=Hīq_V(r)
Sino-Caucasian etymology: Sino-Caucasian etymology
Meaning: to pull, take out; to drag, carry
Proto-Nakh: *=āq- / *=āqq-
Proto-Avaro-Andian: *=iq:-
Proto-Lak: z-iI=χ:i-
Proto-Dargwa: *=a(r)q:I-
Proto-Lezghian: *ʔiqIV(r)-
Proto-Khinalug: -q-wi
Proto-West Caucasian: *q:V (~q́:-,q́I-)
Notes: Despite the root's somewhat expressive character, correspondences are regular, and the PNC reconstruction seems reliable. Traces of *-r-conjugation can be found in PA (stem II *q:ur-), and perhaps also in Darg. (medial -r- which is otherwise unclear) - although the decisive evidence of certain Lezghian languages is missing. See also comments to PEC *Harq_wV 'to dig'.
Proto-North Caucasian: *=Hŏq̇_Ē
Sino-Caucasian etymology: Sino-Caucasian etymology
Meaning: to do, make; to be, become
Proto-Tsezian: *=ɔq- B
Proto-Dargwa: *=a(r)q̇- / *=i(r)q̇-
Proto-Lezghian: *ʔaq̇a-
Proto-Khinalug: q̇i
Proto-West Caucasian: *q́I:a
Notes: Trubetzkoy 1930,87 compares WC *q́I:a 'to be' with another PEC stem (*ʔikV q.v.), which is impossible for phonetic reasons. The comparison with *=Hŏq̇_Ē seems quite plausible semantically and phonetically.

A similar root exists in Kartvelian (Georg. q̇a-w- 'to be, to have'); its comparison with WC see in Charaya 1912, 37, Lomtatidze 1956, 225, 228; the nature of its connection with the NC root is yet to be cleared up.

Proto-North Caucasian: *=Hoq̇_V
Meaning: to sink
Proto-Avaro-Andian: *=uq̇:-
Proto-Lak: =uIq̇a-
Proto-Lezghian: *ʔoq̇:Iɨ-
Notes: Reconstructed for the PEC level. Although the root is attested only in three languages, correspondences are quite regular and the root seems to be well distinguished from several similar roots (see *HVq̇_Vr 'to drink', *HVlG_wVl 'to swallow', *=HVq̇_wVn id.).
Proto-North Caucasian: *=Hoǯ_Ăl
Sino-Caucasian etymology: Sino-Caucasian etymology
Meaning: to pour, drink; to strain, milk
Proto-Avaro-Andian: *č̣:al- (~-o-)
Proto-Lak: ħač̣a-
Proto-Dargwa: *=i(r)č:-
Proto-Lezghian: *ʡoč̣:an- (~-l-)
Proto-Khinalug: loži
Proto-West Caucasian: *žV
Notes: Trubetzkoy (1930, 88-89) compares the WC root with other EC material (see *=ānʒŭ); the present comparison seems to us preferable, because the WC root contains not a hissing, but a hushing affricate (the correspondence PAK *ź : Ub., PAK *z points only to PWC *ž).
Proto-North Caucasian: *=HōjćwV
Sino-Caucasian etymology: Sino-Caucasian etymology
Meaning: to untie, unbind
Proto-Nakh: *=āsṭ-
Proto-Avaro-Andian: *=ajčʷ-
Proto-Lezghian: *ʡočʷa ( ~ -ɨ)
Notes: Reconstructed for the PEC level. Note the correspondence of PA *-j- to the PN development *ćw > *sṭ. The Nakh languages also have a root *=ēbc- / *=ōbc- 'to knit, plait' (Chech. =ūc-, Bacb. =epc-, term. =opc-) which may reflect the same verbal stem (with the plural infix -b-, which superseded *-j- and prevented the development *-jć- > *-sṭ-). Cf. also HU: Hurr. χuž- 'to bind, to detain', Urart. χuš- 'to annul (services), to stem (water)' (*'to untie'), see Diakonoff-Starostin 1986, 40.
Proto-North Caucasian: *=HrV̆jś_Ē
Meaning: thick, dense, fat
Proto-Nakh: *=arsṭ-
Proto-Avaro-Andian: *=iš:-
Proto-Tsezian: *ʕaš:-
Proto-Lezghian: *rɨš:V-
Proto-West Caucasian: *pǝśǝ ( ~ -š-)
Notes: The WC form has a usual labial prefix (a former class marker). Medial *-j- must be reconstructed to account for the development *-ś- > *-sṭ- in PN. Vocalic correspondences are not quite clear (due to the -j- and to the influence of the initial laryngeal); otherwise correspondences are regular.
Proto-North Caucasian: *=HŭqVn ( ~ -ŏ-)
Sino-Caucasian etymology: Sino-Caucasian etymology
Meaning: long, big
Proto-Nakh: *=aqqu-n
Proto-Lak: qun-
Proto-Dargwa: *=uqIVn-
Notes: Reconstructed for the PEC level. Gemination in PN is expressive.
Proto-North Caucasian: *=Huq̇Ŭn
Sino-Caucasian etymology: Sino-Caucasian etymology
Meaning: to go, to come
Proto-Avaro-Andian: *=uq̇Vn-
Proto-Tsezian: *=[ã]q̇-
Proto-Lak: =uq̇a-
Proto-Dargwa: *=uq̇Ian-
Proto-Lezghian: *ʔVq̇IV(n)-
Proto-West Caucasian: *q̇ʷa ( ~ *q̇Iʷa)
Notes: The original meaning of the root should be probably reconstructed as "to go, walk (away from the speaker)". The etymology seems reliable phonetically and semantically.
Proto-North Caucasian: *=Hurq̇_V
Meaning: to lose, be defeated
Proto-Avaro-Andian: *q̇:V-
Proto-Lak: q̇uI=q̇i-
Proto-Dargwa: *d-urhI-
Proto-Lezghian: *ʡorq̇:Ie- (~ -ä)
Notes: Reconstructed for the PEC level. The Lak. form is reduplicated.
Proto-North Caucasian: *=Huǯ_Vn
Sino-Caucasian etymology: Sino-Caucasian etymology
Meaning: to clear up (of weather)
Proto-Avaro-Andian: *=Vč̣:Vn- ( ~ -c̣:-)
Proto-Lezghian: *ʡoč̣:Vn-
Notes: Cf. also Hurr. χežmǝ 'clear, bright' (see Diakonoff-Starostin 1986, 33).
Proto-North Caucasian: *=HVlḳ(w)Vn
Meaning: to stick, glue
Proto-Avaro-Andian: *-iḳ-
Proto-Lak: laIḳi-
Proto-Dargwa: *=alḳʷVn
Notes: Reconstructed for the PEC level. One feels tempted to compare also Lezg. al-ḳi- 'to stick, glue, adhere', k-iḳi- id.; but if this is the same verbal root as eḳi- 'to stick, be stuck', it should be kept separated from *=HVlḳ(w)Vn, because the Akht. correspondence (ak:ɨ-) points only to PL *-ƛ̣:-.
Proto-North Caucasian: *=HVq̇_wĔ
Sino-Caucasian etymology: Sino-Caucasian etymology
Meaning: to rumple, knead
Proto-Avaro-Andian: =aḳ:ʷV(n) ( ~ -o-)
Proto-Tsezian: *=eq̇ʷ- / *q̇eq̇ʷ-
Proto-Lezghian: *ʔäq̇Iʷa ( ~ -ɨ)
Proto-West Caucasian: *q̇́Iʷa
Notes: A common NC verb; due to its semantics subject to expressive changes (especially in the Av.-And. area) - but still the reconstruction seems both phonetically and semantically plausible.
Proto-North Caucasian: *=HVq̇_wVn
Meaning: to swallow
Proto-Avaro-Andian: *=iḳ:ʷVn
Proto-Lezghian: *ʔeq̇IʷV(n)
Notes: An Aand-Lezg. isogloss. In Lezgian languages the root tends to contaminate with the reflexes of *HVq̇_Vr 'to drink' and *=Hoq̇_V 'to sink' (q.v.).
Proto-North Caucasian: *=HVwƛ̣_Ān
Meaning: to sleep
Proto-Nakh: *nɦāṗ
Proto-Avaro-Andian: *ƛ̣:in-
Proto-Tsezian: *=ɨ̃ƛ- / *ƛV-
Proto-Lak: maḳ
Proto-Dargwa: *muɣer
Proto-Lezghian: *näwƛ̣
Proto-West Caucasian: *ƛ:ʷA
Notes: The verbal stem as such is reflected only in Av.-And.-Tsezian and WC languages. In most EC languages much more widely spread is the nominal derivate *nhewƛ̣_ŭ 'sleep' (a rather unique case of *n-prefix; perhaps it is actually *mhewƛ̣_ŭ with early dissimilation?), with either long or short first vowel (long *ē is reflected in PN, short *e - in other languages). Note a unique reflex *-wƛ̣- > *-ṗ- in PN, and the irregular development of *ƛ̣ in a tense word > *ƛ̣ in PL. The latter phenomenon is explained obviously by the influence of another NC root, *ɦemƛ̣V 'dream' q.v.

    See Trubetzkoy 1922, 241.

Proto-North Caucasian: *=ɦŏc̣V
Sino-Caucasian etymology: Sino-Caucasian etymology
Meaning: full, to fill
Proto-Nakh: *=uc̣-i(na)
Proto-Avaro-Andian: *=ic̣-
Proto-Tsezian: *=[ǝ]c̣-
Proto-Lak: =u=c̣u-
Proto-Dargwa: *=ic̣-
Proto-Lezghian: *hIac̣ɨ-
Proto-Khinalug: c̣i
Proto-West Caucasian: *zA
Notes: A secure common NC root, serving in both verbal and adjectival functions. It is usually accompanied by class prefixes; however, comparing PL *hIac̣ɨ- and the Av. Ablaut stem ʕorc̣- (with infixed -r-) we may reconstruct the initial laryngeal *ɦ-, superseded by class prefixes in most languages.

    See Trubetzkoy 1930, 275.

Proto-North Caucasian: *=iʔwV
Meaning: to say
Proto-Avaro-Andian: *ʔVb-
Proto-Lak: ṭu-
Proto-Dargwa: *ʔV-
Proto-Lezghian: *ʔiʔIʷɨ-
Proto-Khinalug: li (?)
Notes: Reconstructed for the PEC level. One of the verbs with laryngeal root-consonant.
Proto-North Caucasian: *=iʡwVl
Sino-Caucasian etymology: Sino-Caucasian etymology
Meaning: to feed on, to eat; to bite
Proto-Nakh: *q-aħ-
Proto-Avaro-Andian: *r-VHVn-
Proto-Tsezian: *heIn- / *heIl-
Proto-Lezghian: *ʔiʔʷäl-
Notes: Reconstructed for the PEC level. Correspondences are regular.
Proto-North Caucasian: *=ićV ( ~ -ä-)
Sino-Caucasian etymology: Sino-Caucasian etymology
Meaning: to sell, distribute
Proto-Avaro-Andian: *=ič-
Proto-Tsezian: *=ɨ̃s:-
Proto-Dargwa: *=ic-
Proto-Khinalug: če=ḳʷi
Notes: Reconstructed for the PEC level. Correspondences are regular (except for the nasalisation in PTs, which must be secondary - as well as the -n-conjugation in some Avar dialects).
Proto-North Caucasian: *=ič_V(w)
Sino-Caucasian etymology: Sino-Caucasian etymology
Meaning: to hit, break, wound
Proto-Nakh: *čabu ( ~ -w-)
Proto-Tsezian: *=iš:ʷ-
Proto-Lak: =i=š:u-
Proto-Dargwa: *š:aIw ( ~ š-)
Notes: Reconstructed for the PEC level. The verbal root is preserved only in PTs and Laki.; PN and PD reflect only the derivate *č_V-uV 'wound' ( = Lak. š:awu).
