Lezghian etymology :

Search within this database
Proto-Lezghian: *hišʷä-
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: to run (away)
Agul: hiš-
Archi: šeI-
Comment: In Archi cf. also heIrša-s (dur. heIršu-r) 'to run' (from the Ablaut grade *häšʷä- with a durative infix). The MSU spelling is heIrš:a-s, but the word is impossible to separate from šeI-s 'to run away' (connected like qIe-s : heIrqIa-s 'to go, walk'), thus the tenseness of -š:- is either misspelled or expressive (another solution would be a contamination with PL *[š:ʷ]ar- q.v.). Cf. also Ag. at:-iš- 'to jump', perhaps also ʁa-jša- 'to stand up'.

    See Хайдаков 1973, 119.

Abkhaz-Adyghe etymology :

Search within this database
Proto-West-Caucasian: *č́:ʷa
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: 1 to run 2 to walk uncertainly
Adyghe: ča-n 1
Kabardian: ža-n 1
Ubykh: ḳ́á-č́a- 2
Comments: PAK *č:a-; Ub. sǝ-ḳ́á-č́a-n. The Ub. verb is a compound with ḳ́a- 'to go, walk'. For phonetic reasons the comparison of PAK *č:a- and Ub. -č́a- (pointing to PWC *č́:ʷa-) is preferable to other comparisons: PAK *č:a- and Ub. žaja 'swift' (Mészáros 1934, 326); PAK *č:a- and PAT *ća- 'to go' (Shagirov 1, 193).
