Proto-Avaro-Andian: *c̣irq̇:V
Proto-Lak: c̣iniq̇
Proto-Dargwa: *c̣irq̇
Notes: Reconstructed for the PEC level. Medial -r- in Av.-And. is not quite clear (we would rather expect here a loss of medial resonant); also rather strange is the paradigm A in Avar (Nakh languages do not show any trace of laryngeals). These irregularities can be perhaps explained by interlingual borrowing - but in general the antiquity of the root is beyond doubt.

Proto-Nakh: *c̣ōq̇
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: ounce, snow leopard
Chechen: c̣oq̇
Ingush: c̣oq̇
Comments: The Chech. word is recorded only in the Russian-Chechen and Ingush-Chechen-Russian dictionaries (the standard source - Chechen-Russian dictionary - records only the synonymous compound c̣oq̇-berg, and Uslar has only another compound, c̣oq̇-ɛrzaw 'eagle'), but vowel length can be securely postulated on the basis of a derived adjective: Chech. c̣ȫq̇a 'variegated (of animals)'. The oblique stem can be reconstructed as *c̣ōq̇e- (Chech. [in the Ingush-Chechen-Russian dictionary] c̣öq̇a-, Ing. c̣oq̇o). The word belongs to the 3d class in both languages.

Protoform: *c̣irq̇:V
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: 1 lynx 2 ounce, snow leopard
Avar: c̣irq̇: 1
Akhvakh: c̣iq̇:o 1
Godoberi: c̣irq̇:u 2
Comments: Av. paradigm A (gen. c̣írq̇:i-l). Cf. also Akhv. Tlan. c̣iq̇:i 'lynx'. We should note the preservation of c̣- in Akhv. (regularly č̣- would be expected): this is either a misspelling of Magomedbekova (in which case the correct form is c̣:iq̇:o, and c̣:- should be explained by early assimilation in tenseness), or the Akhvakh form was influenced by Avar c̣irq̇:. Certainly borrowed from Avar are the forms: Akhv. Tseg. c̣irq̇:, Tind. c̣irq̇: 'lynx'.
