Yenisseian etymology :

Search within this database
Proto-Yenisseian: *ʔa (~x-)
Meaning: to eat
Ket: dīvǝ1 (Kur.) , Bak., Sur. dībǝ1, South. dīṕ/ dīf́ ( < dīv́) "I eat"; Kur. dūvǝ1, Bak., Sur. dūbǝ1, South. dūṕ / dūf́ "he eats"; (Werner 1, 194) dia-d-ɔ 'ich esse ihn", di:-d-ɔ 'ich esse sie'; cf. also a 'sich verschlucken' (Werner 1, 11)
Yug: dīp "I eat", dūp "he eats"; cf. also ɔ 'sich verschlucken' (Werner 1, 224)
Comments: Werner 1, 359 *a: the root is discernible in the Ket and Yug forms, and Werner must be right in separating it from Kott. ōpaŋ 'to drink'. The reconstruction *ʔVbV in КС... should therefore be abolished. Cf. *ʔop.
