Proto-Afro-Asiatic: *ʕagab- ~ *gVbVʕ- 'buffalo/bull' (?)
Meaning: bull
Semitic: *ʕagab- ~ *gʷabay- 'buffalo' (?)
Egyptian: *gVbVʕ- 'bull' (met.?)
Beḍauye (Beja): *ʔagab- (<*ʕagab-) 'buffalo'
Central Cushitic (Agaw): *kabg- (<*gabgab- <*ʕVgab-?) 'buffalo' (?)
Saho-Afar: *ʕagab- 'buffalo'
Notes: Cf. Bla. Beja Fauna, 1 (Beja; Saho; Bil.;Tgr.). The similarity of the Eth., Beja and Saho forms makes one suspect an areal term, borrowed from Eth. to Beja and Saho or from one of the latter languages to Eth. The Bilin form, if related, does not look a loan. The Egyptian parallel, though metathetic, allows, with reservations, for preserving this root.
