Proto-Nilgiri : *paṛd-
Meaning : to tell
South Dravidian etymology: South Dravidian etymology
Kota : paṛd- (payd-/paṛdy-), aṛd- (ayd-/aṛdy-)
Toda : ? öšt- (öšty-) "to say, tell (story lament) (or with 4430)"
Notes : A unique case of a *-ṛd-ending stem in PN. It may go back to an earlier suffixal stem *paḍ-V-nd- or *paṛ-V-nd- (cf. the frequent occurrence of the cluster -ṛd- < *-ḍ-V-nd- in past stems from strong bisyllabic bases). Forms with zero anlaut, however, are irregular - dialectal or borrowed from Kannada dialects where they have not been preserved themselves.
Number in DED : 4003
