North Caucasian etymology :

\data\cauc\caucet
Proto-North Caucasian: *ɦwmĭc̣_ĕ
Meaning: a coniferous tree
Proto-Nakh: *bac̣a
Proto-Avaro-Andian: *himc̣:V
Proto-Lak: wac̣a
Proto-West Caucasian: *maźV
Notes: Although not widely spread in the EC area (coniferous trees are rare in Daghestan), the root seems quite reliable. Note that Lak. > Darg. wac̣a 'forest' (otherwise we would expect ħ- or b- in Darg.). See Bouda 1948 (Lak-WC). We should stress that PWC *maźV is a genuine root, and has nothing to do with the Iranian root *nauča- 'a pine-like cypress' (Pers. nāǯū 'pine-tree', nōǯ 'cypress', Osset. naz/nazu 'fir-tree', näzǝ/näzi 'pine-tree', whence Georg. naʒvi 'fir-tree', Megr. nuʒu id.).

    See Abdokov 1983, 108.
