The root must have originally meant 'woman' in general and has preserved this meaning in PWC *pǝχ́ʷA-śʷǝ: PAT *pǝħʷǝśǝ 'woman' (Abkh. a-pħʷǝ́s, Bz. a-pħʷǝ́ś, Abaz. pħʷǝs) = Ub. pχ́ašʷ 'wife'.
