Comments:JLTT 531. RJ sù points to *sù, supported by the Tokyo variant sú; however, Tokyo sù and all other dialect forms go back to *sú. A possibility of being borrowed from Middle Chinese 州 ćü is not excluded - although not very significant (the word is attested in archaic texts containing very few Chinese loanwords).
