Telugu etymology :

Search within this database
Proto-Telugu : *ala-
Meaning : to smear, (B) to wash
Dravidian etymology: Dravidian etymology
Telugu : alamu
Additional forms : Also alãdu to smear, daub, apply; (?) aluku to smear the floor of a house or a mud wall, etc. with macerated cowdung
Notes : Only the form alamu is easily comparable with its SDR equivalent (*alamb-). The stem alãdu is not quite clear morphologically; as for aluku, it almost certainly belongs elsewhere (see PDR *aḷ-) - in fact, it is entered in DEDR twice, as is the usual practice. Some semantic contamination may, of course, have been possible.
Number in DED : 246
