Nilgiri etymology :

\data\drav\ktet
Proto-Nilgiri : *Kil-
Meaning : to be able
South Dravidian etymology: South Dravidian etymology
Kota : gicg- (gicgy-) "to be a fit or deserving person, be able" (?)
Toda : kɨs_- (kɨd_-)
Additional forms : Also Toda ? kel ōɫ̣ old man; keloč old woman (or with 1579)
Notes : Toda kɨs_- is clear, but the other forms are very dubious. PN *-l- cannot yield Kota -c-; at most a form like gicg- could reflect a complex stem like *kilaṭ-Vŋ-, which is highly improbable (and, of course, unconfirmed by external data). Additional Toda forms are questionable both phonetically (irreg. vocalism) and semantically.
Number in DED : 1570
