Proto-North Caucasian: *HraʎwE
Sino-Caucasian etymology: Sino-Caucasian etymology
Meaning: to fall, go down
Proto-Avaro-Andian: *ʎʷV-b-
Proto-Lak: t:iri=x:i-
Proto-Dargwa: *=ax:-/*=alx:-(/-i-)
Proto-Lezghian: *ʔarʎɨ-
Proto-West Caucasian: *ʎ́ʷV
Notes: One of the rare verbal roots with the root structure *HRVCV: such a reconstruction is directly suggested by the Lak. reflex t:irix:i-. Other languages have modified the structure of the root (we would expect *dirix:- in PD and *raʎɨ- in PL), having reinterpreted its Anlaut as a morphological prefix. The root demonstrates the verbal Ablaut *a/i.

    See Trubetzkoy 1922, 240 (and comments on p. 443).

Lezghian etymology :

Search within this database
Proto-Lezghian: *ʔarʎɨ-
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: 1 to fall 2 to go down, roll down 3 to get into
Lezghian: aw-ax- 2
Tabasaran: a=x- 1
Agul: arx- 3
Tsakhur: q:aʔ-a=xa- 1
Budukh: araxa- / a=xu-
Comment: The verb is very productive (used with many preverbs, especially in Tab. and Ag. - cf. Ag. ʁ-arx- 'to lie down, to sleep' etc.), but sometimes tends to contaminate with the roots *ʔeʎe- 'to put' and *ʔeʎ:ʷɨ- 'to lie, to put' which are to be strictly distinguished.

North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: to go down, lower oneself
Adyghe: ja-xǝ-
Kabardian: ja-xǝ-
Ubykh: šʷa-
Comments: PAK *ja-xǝ- (with a pronominal prefix *ja-); Ub. sǝ́-šʷa-n. The Ad. root may be alternatively compared with the Adygh noun *xǝ 'bottom' q.v. (see Yakovlev 1941, 210), but the latter seems to have a separate EC parallel. Despite Shagirov (1,178), however, Ub. χa 'bottom' can be connected neither with PAK *ja-xǝ-, nor with PAK *xǝ 'bottom'.
