Further etymology: Наиболее вероятно сравнение с лат. femen, femur, -oris, род. п. также feminis; см. Бернекер 1, 48; Петр, ВВ 21, 210; Соболевский, ЖМНП, 1886, стр. 146. Образование femen ср. с вы́мя из *ūdhmen -- то же. Менее удачно сравнение Розвадовского (RS 2, 104) с лтш. bedre "яма", производимым от best "копать" (см. бода́ть), лат. fodio. Он видит подтверждение своей этимологии в польск. ubiedrze "склон", но оно может быть образовано от biodro "склон горы", как нем. Küste "берег": лат. costa "ребро". Сомнительно сопоставление Остен-Сакена (IF 23, 377 и сл.) с др.-исл. kně-beð, др.-сакс. kneo-beda "коленопреклонение" и др.-инд. jñu-bādh- "преклоняющий колена" от bādhatē "теснит, жмет, давит".
