Abkhaz-Adyghe etymology :
Search within this database
Proto-West-Caucasian: *Pc̣V
Meaning: 1 to go sour, to curdle (of milk) 2 raw
Adyghe: ṗc̣a-n
Kabardian: ṗc̣a-n
Comments: PAK *ṗc̣a. The WC etymology of Shagirov (2,50-51: comparison with Ub. baćǝ- 'to become thick') seems dubious for both semantic and phonetic reasons. Since the EC counterpart of the root means both 'sour' and 'raw' (a natural and frequent semantic correlation), it seems possible to compare also (with a secondary loss of initial labial) PAK *c̣ǝ-ná (Ad., Kab. c̣ǝna) 'raw' (also borrowed in Ub.: c̣ǝna id., see Shagirov 2, 126).

North Caucasian etymology :
Search within this database
Proto-North Caucasian: *ʔĕc̣wĂ
Meaning: raw, sour; to get sour
Proto-West Caucasian: *Pc̣V Notes: The PN form (as well as PAK *c̣ǝ-na) contains a suffixed *-nV (originally participial); the weak initial syllable with a laryngeal is reduced (which probably reflects the Ablaut grade *ʔĭc̣wĂ). The WC form contains a labial (class) prefix, with a usual in this case delabialisation of the affricate. The comparison of PAK *c̣ǝ-na with Lezg. was proposed by Rogava (1956, 81); see also Абдоков 1983, 150-151.

Proto-Nakh: *ṭune
Meaning: 1 dampness, moistness 2 raw, damp, moist
Chechen: ṭüna 2
Ingush: ṭuna-l 1
Batsbi: ṭwĩ 1
Comments: The pure stem is preserved in Bacb. (cf. also Chech. ṭun-dan 'to moisten' = Bacb. ṭwin-od-dar); the Chech. adjective goes back to *ṭune-n (cf. in Uslar's recording ṭüniŋ; cf. also Cheb. ṭunĩ, Shar. ṭujnĩ, Khild. ṭwinĩ etc.).

Lezghian etymology :

Proto-Lezghian: *ʔäc̣ʷV
Meaning: 1 raw 2 sour 3 to be fermented
Lezghian: ic̣i 1
Tabasaran: uč̣̌ru 2
Agul: ruc̣ar 2
Udi: aje-sun 3
Comment: The root normally does not have class prefixes, thus the Ag. form with r- is probably secondary (the same with Tab. Düb. rič̣̌ri id.). In Ud. cf. also aIjiI-n 'ferment, yeast'.
