Lit.), nach E. Fraenkel KZ. 63, 202 aus *ὑκνός durch dissimilatorischen Lautwandel?? (W. Schulze GGA. 1897, 908); bret. offen f. `Steintrog' trotz Loth RC. 43, 410 kaum aus *uppā; ags. ofnet `kleines Gefäß', ofen, ahd. ovan, anord. ofn `Ofen' (ebenfalls auf *ueqʷnos zurückführbar; das anlautende - bewirkte wie in wulfa- `Wolf' die Entwicklung von -lv- zu -f-, während got. usw. auhns auf idg. *uqʷ-nós zurückführt; der Verlust des w- in Ofen muß dann allerdings aus Einfluß dieser Schwesterform *uhna- erklärt werden).
