North Caucasian etymology :

Search within this database
Proto-North Caucasian: *ʔăjʒăɫʔV
Meaning: a k. of tree (rowan, cornel)
Proto-Nakh: *(ʔă)stVw
Proto-Avaro-Andian: *ʔazal ( ~ o)
Proto-Tsezian: *ʔãsa
Proto-West Caucasian: *ʒ́a ( ~ ǯ-)
Notes: Correspondences are regular. The etymology seems preferable to Trubetzkoy's comparison (PWC *ʒ́a : PEC *ʒāʒĕ 'thorn' - which has a quite different etymology).

Avar-Andian etymology :

Protoform: *ʔazal ( ~ o)
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: 1 strawberry 2 rowan
Avar: azáli
Akhvakh: aža-naq:e 1
Chamalal: azal 2
Godoberi: azal 2
Comments: The Av. word has a specific meaning: "silk fibres of a cocoon; maize stigmata". In Akhv. (Magomedbekova writes: ažaneq:e) meaning of the component -neq:e is not clear (aža- can be analyzed as aža 'bush', but external evidence clearly shows that it is a folk etymology, due to the merger of *z and *ž in Akhvakh).

Abkhaz-Adyghe etymology :

Search within this database
Proto-West-Caucasian: *ʒ́a ( ~ ǯ-)
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: cornel
Abkhaz: a-bgǝ́-ʒara
Abaza: zarǝ́
Adyghe: zājǝ
Kabardian: za
Comments: PAT *ʒ́a-rV (-rV is originally a collective suffix), cf. also the Abzh. variant a-bgǝ́-ʒǝr, Bzyb. a-bgǝ́-ʒ́ar (the compound means literally "fox's cornel"); PAK *za (Ad. reflects only the compound *za-jǝ́, where -jǝ is the "tree suffix", = Kab. zej 'cornel-tree').

Reason for spirantization ʒ > z in Abaz. is not quite clear; perhaps it is due to Adygh influence, although the word as such can not be regarded as an Adygh loan (despite Lomtatidze 1944,209, Kondzharia 1969,8).

The correspondence PAT *ʒ́ : PAT *z points to PWC *ʒ́ or *ǯ.
