Further etymology: Хотелось бы считать расширением прич. на -to- от поро́ть, аналогично взя́тка и под.; см. Маценауэр, LF 13, 19 и сл.; Mi. EW 258. Однако ввиду наличия формы за́порток "тухлое яйцо" имеется тенденция (Преобр. 2, 110) сравнивать это слово с др.-инд. pr̥thukas "дитя, мальчик, детеныш", осет. firt'on "скот", греч. πόρτις, πόρταξ, πόρις "теленок, телка", д.-в.-н. farro, far "бык", лит. periù "высиживаю (птенцов)", лат. pariō "рождаю", арм. ort' "теленок"; ср. Уленбек, Aind. Wb. 174; Хольтхаузен, Aengl. Wb. 112; Клюге-Гётце 147. Последняя этимология едва ли более вероятна, чем первая.
