North Caucasian etymology :

Search within this database
Proto-North Caucasian: *jVrg_Ĕ
Meaning: a k. of grass
Proto-Nakh: *jVrʎ-
Proto-Tsezian: *ħeƛu B
Proto-Lak: la
Proto-Khinalug: ink:
Proto-West Caucasian: *jaɣ́a
Notes: The NC etymology seems plausible both phonetically and semantically. The Lak. form has reduced the first weak syllable (la < *jila). Not quite clear is the Khin. reflex: Кибрик-Кодзасов-Оловянникова 1972 have a notation ink:, while the latest MSU recordings have ink - both are irregular (normally -ḳ would be expected).

Proto-Nakh: *jVrʎ-
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: weeds
Chechen: jar-aš
Ingush: jɔrh
Comments: 4th class in Ing., plur. tant. in Chech. The vowel correspondence is irregular (Chech. has a short -a-, but Ing. ɔ points to long *ā before a following back vowel - indicating an oblique base like *jārʎu-).

Proto-West-Caucasian: *jaɣ́a
North Caucasian etymology: North Caucasian etymology
Meaning: goose-foot (grass)
Adyghe: jaž́ā-šχʷa
Kabardian: jāźā-śχʷa
Comments: PAK *jaž́a (used only in a compound with *šχʷa 'grey' < *šʷǝχʷa q.v.). The compound actually means "grey grass", or possibly just "jaž́a-grass" - because the root *šχʷV in PAK has also the meaning 'burdock, weeds' - but is now folk-etymologically understood as "grey ashes" - because of the confusion of the two originally separate roots (see *jaɣ́a 'ashes').
